SAORI Garment Making Workshop with Rosie Green

  • Trigonos Plas Baladeulyn, Nantlle Caernarfon Wales (map)

Join Rosie Green, experienced textile artist and facilitator, on this fun and creative workshop.

SAORI weaving is rooted in the activity of free-flowing, uninhibited hand weaving and the core philosophy that we are all born with unique sensibilities and the power to create. SAORI is not only a practice of connecting deeply with one’s own creative and authentic self, but it is also a practice of connecting deeply with others. By discovering and nurturing our individuality yet shared humanity and ability to express ourselves, we cultivate awareness and compassion within ourselves and our global community.

SAORI is a Japanese freestyle approach to hand-weaving that encourages people to express themselves intuitively in a fun ‘no rules, no mistakes’ attitude.

The process of making SAORI clothing does not require proficient sewing skills, just simple straight stitch on a sewing machine or sewing by hand!

We will be making a warp in a quick and easy SAORI way then weaving a length of cloth to make a simple SAORI style garment.

This retreat is aimed at those who already have a SAORI loom and would like the support, encouragement and shared inspiration to make a warp, weave the cloth and sew a garment. It is however also also open to complete beginners!

In addition to developing or learning to weave, this retreat will give allow you to unwind and find your inner peace as you work through the gentle art of SAORI weaving.

Workshop Highlights:

Opportunity to Switch Off: Escape from the hectic pace of life, slow down and create something with your hands and heart.

Creativity with Likeminded People: Enjoy some you time whilst also sharing time with others.

Delicious Nourishing Food: Enjoy our deliciously grown bio dynamic produce, from the land to the plate, lovingly created by our chefs for you to enjoy.

Tranquil Surroundings: Indulge in relaxation, leisurely walks, and fireside reading in a beautiful part of Wales, Eryri National Park.

What is SAORI?

SAORI weaving is a philosophy of personal creativity and self development practiced all over the world. With some it is a form of meditation, with others it is a means of relaxing and recharging their energies. And of course others who simply want to weave cloth!

We do not make plans, or have set ideas of what we will weave, and the finished cloth is always a surprise and a joy. The design of the looms and the type of materials we use produce a cloth that is suitable for garment making. These garments are simple, with little or no cutting to celebrate the cloth, and where drape and adjustments allow for individuality and a unique garment to suit the maker.

Within the SAORI philosophy there are five slogans of weaving which will be followed during the retreat:

  • Consider the differences between a machine and a human being

  • Be bold and adventurous

  • Look out through eyes that shine

  • Inspire one another and everyone in the community

We will follow the SAORI philosophy that we are born with creativity and intuition.

What to Expect:

From the Heart: Slip away and inspiration will come to ‘weave from your heart’. There is no pressure or expectation yet you will be surprised and amazed by what you produce in the day.

Deepen your Connection with Your Natural Self: Enhance your self-understanding through SAORI.

Disconnect from the Modern World: Escape the hustle and bustle of daily life to flow with the calming rhythm of Trigonos an option digital detox to truly unwind too.

Nourish Your Wellbeing: Rejuvenate your mental, physical state.

This Workshop will Help You:

• Calm your Mind: With a ‘no rules, no mistakes’ philosophy SAORI| weaving will relax your state of being.
• Timeout for Yourself: Opportunity to get away from the busyness of day to day life.

Who is this Workshop For?

This workshop is for anyone who needs a bit of time to switch off and re-focus, or who just wants to try something new and spend time in a beautiful place in the heart of Eryri with other like minded people.

One of the best experiences I have booked. Rosie is an amazing woman. She completely makes you feel at ease and instills confidence in your ability to weave. And she is totally correct! I made a beautiful table runner. However, the whole experience is more than creating a beautiful piece of weaving. Words do not accurately describe this phenomenal experience. Make this a destination on your journey. Simply Amazing!

About the Facilitator

Rosie Green, Saori Making, Trigonos Event

Rosie Green was first drawn to the practical process of hand weaving when she took a course in textiles. Since then she has followed a path in weaving. In 1982 Rosie moved to North Wales where she started demonstrating in the Bodeilio Weaving Centre on Anglessey. In 2014 Rosie opened SAORIMôr and was the first registered SAORI free-weaving studio in Wales.

As her practice as an Artist Facilitator has developed and changed over the years, Rosie has learned many things about the creative process, its value and its place in the lives of all of us. The process of SAORI helps us find our way.

I am a facilitator and instructor in SAORI weaving but I also have a long experience in traditional weaving. This helps me understand the various approaches people might have and helps me support each individual and their particular needs. The SAORI looms are easy to use and allow for the use of accessories to enable those who have any form of disability, whether significant or less so, to weave with equal value to anyone else. There is no judgement or comparison, we are all equal as human beings.
— Rosie Green

An Insight to the Day…

The day will start with the usual introductions to make sure everyone is comfortable and understands what to expect. For the rest of the day each person works at their own pace weaving with colours and textures of their own choice with support and encouragement from Rosie. You can work quietly or talk and ask as many questions as you like. At the end of the day you will cut the work from the looms and share your experiences of the day. This can be a time to chat about what your cloth might be, share how you feel or just learn how to finish off your work.
